Working with Column Positions

Background

Users can change the visible position of columns by first clicking on the column header to select the column, then clicking again on the column header and dragging it to a different position. The developer can change column positions by setting the .Header.VisiblePosition property of the Column object.

The developer can also see the position of any column by looking at the .Header.VisiblePosition property of the Column object.

  • How do I know where a user has placed a column?

Solutions

The .Header.VisiblePosition property of the Column object can be set and queried to change the position of or query the position of a column.

Sample Project

This sample project allows the user to drag and drop the columns to change their position.

Before you start writing any code, you should place using/imports directives in your code-behind so you don’t need to always type out a member’s fully qualified name.

In Visual Basic:

Click "Change Column Position" to place the "ContactName" column in the first visible position and click "Display Column Positions" to display the Band, Column and VisiblePosition of each column in the TextBox:

The UltraWinGrid Events region contains the following event handlers:

  • UltraGrid1.InitializeLayout - The code in the UltraWinGrid InitializeLayout event tells the grid to fit the columns to the width of the grid:

Button Events

The Button Events region contains the following event handlers:

  • btnChangeColumnPositions.Click - The code in the btnChangeColumnPositions Click event sets the VisiblePosition property of the Column 2 Header object to 0, thus moving the column to the left side of the grid:
